Virtual Classroom

What is a Virtual Classroom?

A virtual classroom is an online location where trainers and learners engage with each other during classes and other educational activities. Much like a physical classroom, a virtual classroom creates an environment for interactive learning.

In virtual classrooms, instructors can display learning materials on a board, hand out documents, and provide other multimedia files; moderate student participation by allowing students to raise their hands and call on them; divide students into groups for discussions or activities, and give out quizzes or other assignments.

Virtual classrooms also allow for classes to be recorded for absent students or for students who want to review previously accessed material. Virtual classrooms can be set up via a variety of technologies including communications platforms such as Zoom, learning-oriented software such as a Learning Management System (LMS), or specialized virtual classroom platforms designed for specific purposes such as virtual labs for hands-on software training.

Uses for Virtual Classrooms

The use of virtual classrooms has boomed recently as more and more people work and study at home. Although this transition may not have been completely smooth, with learner engagement being a key issue, online learning offers significant benefits in a variety of use cases.

For example, virtual classrooms ensure that each learner can learn in his or her ideal environment, remove some of the distractions of physical classrooms and ensure that all learners have an unobstructed view of the board. They also help learners improve their technology skills through hands-on practice, collaboration with the trainer and/or the other students for community learning). Another use case is blended learning which combines in-person training with virtual sessions where they can focus on practicing what they’ve studied, giving learners a more flexible and customized educational experience.

Virtual classrooms allow for many of the same activities as physical classrooms. Trainers can show presentations, write on the board, call on learners, and offer assignments and quizzes. Learners can also break out into smaller sessions for discussions and activities with their colleagues. This allows for collaborative learning and interaction in the business setting, even while learning in different locations.
